2012 Northern Virginia AIA Design Awards – Award of Merit in Residential Architecture

Situated on a knoll in rural Virginia, this modern vernacular stone and wood house overlooks 100 acres of farmland. Straightforward site grading and plantings of pasture grass knit the house to the surrounding agrarian landscape. A tan bluestone path leads from the parking area to the entry court defined by an ipe bridge crossing over a water tank. The bridge creates a threshold at the house that marks the transition from grassland to a minimalist crushed stone court. Near the front door, a corten steel water tank overflows into a long concrete rill that spills into the water tank at the entry bridge. The rill doubles as a bench, creating a place to sit, eat barbeque, and enjoy the beauty of the surrounding agricultural landscape.
