1999 Virginia Society AIA Award of Excellence

The house and garden spaces for this site are defined by the juxtaposition of horizontal ground planes and vertical surfaces. Indigenous materials used for the house and garden, configured with modern spatial intentions, create dynamic spaces that change seasonally in color and texture. The entry terrace extends from the motor court through the building to a large rear terrace with a pool and a fire pit. Below is a smaller garden space that contains fountains and bulb plantings. The opposite side of the house is largely private, with a lawn, perennials, vegetable gardens and a specimen fruit tree. A “secret garden” that contains a water rill, perennials and ferns is visible from the kitchen window.
