Mary Baldwin College North Court
Staunton, Virginia

Mary Baldwin College was established in 1842 on a steeply sloping site overlooking the City of Staunton. The Administration Building, McClung Hall and the Academic Building define the edges of the North Court. Originally a concrete path through a few boxwood hedges, this leftover space was transformed into a garden courtyard. The gallery above the courtyard overlooks Yew hedges and shadblow serviceberry trees aligned with the facade of the building. A set of stairs that ascends through dogwood trees planted in a quincunx pattern defines the open end of the courtyard. A low seat wall capped with bluestone and herringbone brick paving distinguishes the courtyard as a unified space for outdoor dining and entertainment.
